Think about it. Try to imagine a beach with blue water, crystal clear sky and black sand. Sounds a little crazy, huh? Anyway, these beaches exist. So, next time you're planning a vacation or looking for a new place to go for a few days, try going to a black sand beach. If you can't choose just one or you're not sure about any, here's a list of the top 10 black sand beaches.
1. Vik Beach, Iceland
Although you might think that Iceland is not the most beautiful place in the world to enjoy a beach, Vik Beach was voted one of the most beautiful beaches in the world in 1991. Vik is also the rainiest village in Iceland.
While this beach isn't the best beach to lay out and get some sun, it's definitely a wonder to behold.
2. Alaska Black Sand Beach
This beach is only 60 miles from Anchorage. At this beach, you will see water glaciers, waterfalls, green slopes and wildlife that you won't find in a zoo. Remember, you're in Alaska, so this isn't a beach where you want to be sporting a new bikini. Bring warmer clothes than you normally would for this beach. Thank me later.
3. Pololu Valley Beach, Hawaii
At this beach, you'll find you have access to a great view of the Kohala Mountains as well as the coastline. This beach is probably one of the smallest beaches in Hawaii and actually requires a 400 meter climb from the observation deck to reach the beach. It's about a 20 minute walk. Activities such as snorkeling and swimming are not recommended at this beach as the currents are generally extremely strong and the high surf conditions make the water dangerous. If you visit Pololu Valley Beach, try to take a walk and just enjoy the view.
4. Kehena Beach, Hawaii
If you are planning a vacation, this is not the place to take your family, especially if you have young children. The beach is said to be a nudist beach, although this is illegal in Hawaii. You are not alone in Kehena. You can find dolphins here, so this beach is sometimes called Dolphin Beach. If the current is not too bad, you can even swim with these dolphins. Most people who go to Kehena just sit on the sand and enjoy the air and water.
5. Kaimu Beach, Hawaii
Kaimu Beach is another great black sand beach that is a must-see, albeit a bit dangerous. In the 1990s, the beach was covered with about 20' of lava. Recently, those living near the shore have started planting new trees and flowers to revitalize the beach, so to speak. Ferns, palm trees and other plants can be seen growing out of the cracks in the lava. Because of the strong currents, it is recommended not to swim at this beach, but a little standing in the water will not hurt much.
